What does custom hardware assembly include?

Four stages, and a single point of contact from end to end. Defining the requirement first: which software genuinely runs on the machine, how many files are open at once, what constraints of space, noise, heat or power apply in your premises. Then the choice of components, justified line by line. Then assembly and configuration: operating system, drivers, business software, accounts and rights, backup. Finally commissioning at your desk, with the data brought over from the old machine.

What you receive is therefore not a box to unpack but a machine ready to work, documented, and with every part identified — which changes everything the day one of them has to be replaced.

How do you choose components for the work being done?

By looking at what genuinely holds the machine back, not at what sells best. Three kinds of use, three different answers. For office work and administration — accounts, quotations, email, a browser with twenty tabs — it is the disk and the memory that make the machine feel fast, far more than the processor. For design and imaging — CAD, drawings, retouching, video editing — the processor, the graphics card and the amount of memory become decisive, and the storage has to keep up on throughput. For heavy or multi-user business software, it is often the server and the network that need looking at before the workstations.

So we start from the list of software genuinely in use and from the vendors' own requirements, not from a product range. The budget is costed after that survey.

A properly sized machine costs less over three years than an entry-level one replaced twice — and a great deal less than an oversized configuration whose capacity nobody will ever use half of.

Workstation, heavier machine or server: what do you really need?

The question is settled by use, never by sales vocabulary. A workstation equips one person for their daily tasks. A heavier machine earns its place when a job demands sustained power: computation, rendering, large images, several environments open at once. A server answers a shared need: hosting the company's files, running a business application reachable from several machines, or consolidating several machines through virtualisation.

Warranty, parts and repairability: what does bespoke cover?

This is the most concrete advantage of a machine built to order: it can be repaired part by part. A power supply, a disk, a memory module or a fan is replaced on its own, without taking the machine out of service or replacing it — where a sealed unit often means sending the whole thing back to a workshop. Each component keeps its own manufacturer's warranty, and the inventory we maintain says which one is still running, and until when.

We add no warranty of our own on top of the manufacturers': each part stays covered by its own, and we handle the warranty returns for you — you never have to argue with a manufacturer.

Looking after these machines over time is the job of our IT maintenance service: inventory, warranty dates, monitoring of disks and backups, replacement planned rather than endured.

Preparation, deployment and taking back the old estate

A new machine is only worth something once it is in production. Preparation happens at our premises: operating system installed and up to date, business software, printers, email, accounts and rights, backup connected. Deployment is scheduled outside critical hours, machine by machine or in waves, with data and settings brought over so that the user finds their environment again. Where several machines are involved they are prepared identically: that is what makes an estate consistent and maintainable.

The old hardware does not stay in a cupboard. Data is wiped before anything leaves the estate, and the equipment goes to the waste electrical and electronic equipment recycling channel. We take the old hardware back as part of the work.

Is a machine built to order less reliable than a branded one?

No: reliability comes from the components chosen and from the care taken in building it, not from the logo on the case. Building to order is precisely what lets us rule out the parts that fail first on entry-level configurations — power supply, cooling, storage.

Do you bring across the data from the old machine?

Yes, it is included in the commissioning: documents, email, bookmarks, printers and the settings of the business software. The migration is checked with the user before the old machine leaves the desk, and the old machine is only wiped afterwards.

Will you work on an estate you did not build?

Yes. An upgrade — disk, memory, power supply — often costs a great deal less than a replacement, and we say so when that is the case. The inventory carried out during the free audit exists precisely to separate what can be repaired from what has to be replaced.

What happens to the old hardware?

Do you look after the machines after delivery?
